Install/Upgrade VMware vCenter 5.1

Written by on . Posted in How to

Pictures say more than words. Below some screenshots how to upgrade to VMware vCenter version 5.1. Be careful because there are some Pre-requisition before you can update vCenter server. See the screenshots first before you start.

When autorun starts from your DVD or ISO you get the following menu

We are going to use the VMware vCenter Server install. Click Install.

This is an update because there's a previous installation. Go back and upgrade the Inventory service first. Click Ok.

Because there's a Prerequisition we first install vCenter Single Sign On. Click Install

Click Next. Click Next to User Patent Agreement. Click Next to End User License Agreement after you accept

Select Create the primary node for a new vCenter Single Sign On Installation and click Install

Go easy and select Install basis and click Install.

Fill in your password, and click Install.

Because my environment is a demo environment I choose a local Microsoft SQL server instance. I assume you already installed a Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Express Instance. Otherwise you can download this here. Click Install.

Click Next, Next, Next, Install and you're done

Select VMware vCenter Inventory Service, and click Install

Click Next. Click Next to User Patent Agreement. Click Next to End User License Agreement after you accept

Do not overwrite your existing database unless you want to start all over again. Click Next.

Enter Fully Qualified Domain Name and Click Next, Next, Next, Next. You get the point!

The Now you're ready to install/upgrade VMware vCenter 5.1. There are some minor changes to the installation but this Install is pretty straight forward and don't need any assistants I think. If so, drop me an email.

Don't forget to install or upgrade your vSphere Client and Webclient or other stuff.
