RT @50mu: When formatting a disk in HyperV (a LUN from a Dell EMC Unity 450F (all flash), this takes hours. Does anyone know how to format…
Why you need to get Proven
Why it is important to get Proven! As a Storage Geek I can say, because it's cool and fun. But that's not the only reason. There are more reasons to get cerified.
I will tell you my experience which started a long time ago. I was working with VMware virtualization since 2005, storage since 2007. But what do you call working? Adding some LUNs once in a while, and that was it. On the Vmware area I kept hanging with creating some virtual machines. Nothing exciting happened there too. I was lucky a major project was heading to the IT department which involving an expansion of Storage and VMware opportunities. Still relatively a virgin in the storage corner I started my VMware course "VMware Infrastructure 3.5 Install and Configure" and after that an EMC course, "Information Storage and Management". That gave me a broad general perspective. For the first time I could fully discuss with partners without feeling that they could sell me anything. Slowly I began to see the big picture, could discus with colleagues on a higher level and was able to convince management the importancy of storage and virtualization.
It was a good start. But we all know there has never been a greater need for Information than the last decade. Why control information and data growth? When it comes to data, more isn’t always better. In fact, overgrown databases can impair the performance of your mission-critical business applications and custom applications. Jeopardizing the superior service you’ve worked so hard to provide. There are many ways that provides solutions. Mine was another course. I left to the USA following two new courses.
"Information Availability Design and Management" and "Storage Networking Design and Management" where the third and fourth of the two courses in the StorageTechnologist track (EMCST) at the specialist level. The course provided a comprehensive coverage on all aspects of planning, building and managing Information Availability solutions. I developed a broad understanding of information storage, management concepts and was able to managed a process oriented approached in designing. A Star was born! Ok a bit exaggerated, but at least a felt that way. LOL.
After graduating my VMware Certification - VCP4, my last trip for now is getting my EMC Proven Expert level. Trying to get deep. Remember, besides the fun and a load of knowledge it's important to get Proven. You increase confidence in technical competence as comprehensive understanding of broader IT concepts. What about the ability to architect and design multi-vendor, optimized solutions. Or in-depth knowledge and ability to work with EMC or other technologies. One that your boss loves, reduce or eliminate dependency on experts and support from partners. Big savings here!
In the past 2 years, I've been working intensively with redesigning Backup and Recovery, moving inactive data to another Tier layers, implementing Archiving, Introduce new NAS Storage and upgrade our old SAN's to new Clariion systems. Continuing to innovate in VMware solutions like VDI, Disaster Recovery and upgrade solutions. But it is not just down to learning. Follow everything closely and stay on top of it, try to be the best in what you do and can do.
Let's get Proven!
