What's Trending and Beyond
Shift to a new technology platform for growth and innovation
The most important trends and events in 2014 and beyond will cluster around mobility, cloud services, social technologies, and big data. In fact this is the same prediction as last year and even the year before that. There's no doubt that mobile devices are having, and will continue to have, a huge effect on regular PC sales. I believe by now there are more mobile devices as regular PC's sold. Combine this with the internet of things and the PC will belong to a huge minority. The term Internet of Things (IoT) is used to denote advanced connectivity of devices, systems and services that goes beyond the traditional PC. According to Gartner, there will be nearly 26 billion devices on the Internet of Things by 2020. According to ABI Research, more than 30 billion devices will be wirelessly connected to the Internet of Things by 2020. By now it's not a wild guess more and more will be built on mobile devices and apps, Cloud services, mobile broadband networks, Big Data analytics, and social technologies named the "3rd Platform". According to IDC by 2020, 40% of the IT industry's revenue, 98% of its growth will be driven by 3rd Platform technologies that today represent just 22% of IT spending.
The 3rd Platform is described as the next generation Compute platform that's accessed from mobile devices, utilizes Big Data and is Cloud Based.
But as mentioned, predictions today are the same as last year but with a slightly difference. There will be much greater urgency. Many companies somehow are confronted with these developments where they struggling changing this to decent business value.
Cloud services are becoming more accessible as they evolving. Definitely SaaS as a service model has become so familiar that we no longer see it as a cloud service anymore. EMC known for building information infrastructures and virtual infrastructures to help businesses around the globe unleash the power of their digital information is convinced a Hybride Cloud is the path we must walk as they pronounced at EMCWorld in vegas.
In today’s global economy, we live in a world with no borders. Large databases in a Cloud means frequently using their analytical tools too. And soon it is to much data to move around. This can cause a vendor lock. You also have less control over your own data which is often not desirable. We will see the beginning of a strategic shift in what value PaaS and IaaS platforms deliver and who the key players will be.
Basically Amazone dominates in the US and Pivotal is underway. In all other countries we're facing a lack of Cloud providers providing a solid solution or slowed down by fear, laws and regulations. Mainly because of diversity in business, culture, and languages. For the same reason this means that US vendors will not succeed if they copy their US strategies in Europe. Also, many European vendors are building out their own services. But according to research, we are looking for a more hybrid solution. The EMC strategy reflects EMC's belief that new applications made with a mobile-cloud application model will replace today's client/server applications. Pivotal, part of EMC is putting a horse into the race to be the new platform for mobile-cloud. Pivotal is founded on the principle that the new era of big data applications and services should be cloud independent.
Pivotal a Hybrid secure PaaS Cloud service model giving IT organizations a VMware-compatible platform to extend their cloud infrastructure seamlessly beyond their datacenter. Awareness of changing business processes from an IT cost efficiency to a more business agility process can have some serious impact and means changes on both - IT, and business side. In this area, companies need more help and guidance. Identified gaps in IT skills and capabilities is one of many gaps. Less than 20% of IT professionals possess skills and capabilities for designing cloud environments. Develop expertise to define IT transformation strategy and technical/organizational/business objectives and requirements. Break down silos and create IT (business)-wide awareness and urgency about Cloud, Change, and Opportunities.
