Merry Christmas and a five nines business continuity for 2011

on Sunday, 19 December 2010. Posted in Personal

Let's look back to 2010. Another great year for me working with storage and virtualization. Not only on a personal level but also a very successful business year. A lot happend in storage and virtualization 'land'. Basically it al comes down to "The Cloud". Let's face it, every second word seems to beginning with the word CLOUD.

EMC and VMware are committed to offering services in the cloud. Besides services like Google, Amazone, Azure, Terramark etc., EMC introduce Atmos. EMC Atmos is a multi petabyte service for building Cloud storage. This new dynamic for cloud IT services combines the power of Atmos with a delivery platform that gives more resources and control to the consumer and more information to providers. Or what about EMC VPlex? EMC VPLEX with AccessAnywhere lets you seamlessly relocate data between two sites within synchronous distances. The combination of Virtual Storage with VPLEX Metro and Virtual Servers lets you transparently move virtual machines across a distance.

VMware does a great job with vCloud director. vCloud Director leverages the efficient pooling of resources, delivered and consumed as a service. This is possible in public clouds or internally by corporate IT in a private cloud. In my opinion, the last one clould be really a winner regarding partnerships or join-ventures. The last thing we want is to outsource IT. I guess, there is simply to much emotion involved. And wouldn't it be cool to manage your own environment, even if your hardware is stored somewhere else but you still owns it.

Cloud Computing Hype or Next Big Thing. Ready or not. Customers are changing, needs changing. Employees want anytime, anywhere access to their data. Who still works from nine to five. This type of people belongs to the past. Whether we like it or not, we are forced! Whether its called Cloud or has a different name, method of work is changing. That's a fact!

On a personal level I am pretty finished with my goals for now. But new targets have been set. I only have to do my EMC expert level exam. But because of a great excuse :), I not had time to take it.

2010 was also the year that my abstract was accepted for the next phase of EMC’s Knowledge Sharing competition. Of course it's just an abstract of the whole story which will be published in march 2011. Despite the long wait I find it a great honor it wil be published and downloadable for everyone.

Another great opportunity crossed my way this summer. I applied for the position of vSpecialist at EMC. I would have been the first in the Netherlands. Pretty Cool! But geographically, I live in a shitty location, so it was very hard for doing daily work in the Netherlands. And believe me if I am saying there where many scenarios passed my mind to make this work. But ultimately I rejected it. It took me some time to get it out of my system, because it felt as a 'once in a lifetime' opportunity.

But life goes on, and I am still in the position to work with great things. Also for next year I have a great roadmap and huge challenges. The only thing left to say for me is...

Merry Christmas and a five nines business continuity for 2011
