EMC announcing Unity

Simple - Modern - Flexible - Affordable, fits right into the Modern Datacenter

EMC just announced Unity at EMCWorld in Las Vegas. EMC's new Unity product line sets new standards for storage with compelling simplicity, a modern design, affordable prices, and flexible deployment – to meet the needs of resource-constrained IT professionals in large or small companies. 'Nobody' has the time anymore to do projects of 8 months. Unity systems are designed for flash,  and are available in purpose-built (all flash or hybrid) configurations, converged system deployment options (through VCE), and a software-defined virtual edition, all-inclusive software, new differentiated features, internet-enabled management, and a modern design. That a lot of Unity which fit right in the Modern Data Centers of today!

The Unity family consists of:

  1. Unity A modern midrange storage solution, engineered from the ground-up to meet demands for flash. Unity is available in four all Flash and four Hybrid configurations.
  2. VBLOCK Unity will be available in VCE VBLOCK and VxRack configurations.
  3. UnityVSA UnityVSA allows the advanced unified storage and data management features of the Unity family to be easily deployed on a VMware ESXi host, for a software defined’ approach.

Unity is a unified storage system that meets 4 requirements of today’s IT midmarket. It's simple, modern, affordable and flexible.

  • Simple: all-inclusive software. No Software suites anymore. Quick rack-and-stack and customer installable. EMC said goodbye to Jave thank god and introduced a new slick HTML5 user interface, Proactive Assist with call home, and new Cloud-based management.
  • Modern: As ever with semi-conductor technology, users want more data in the same space and faster access to it too. Unity is designed to support the latest dense flash drives such as 3D TLC NAND, introduced new Intel Haswell multicore processors for speed, 2U dense configurations, offering a new scalable file system and integration with VMware (native VVOL’s), Microsoft, OpenStack, and a full REST-API for developers.
  • Flexible: You can meet any storage deployment requirement with Unity from virtual to purpose built to converged infrastructure.  All deployment options support the same unified data services (SAN/NAS and VVOLS) for any workload (standalone or mixed) with traditional file (file consolidation, home directories) as well as transactional workloads for both file and block on both all flash and hybrid configurations (Oracle, Exchange, SQL Server, SharePoint, SAP, VDI, VMware and Microsoft Hyper-V).
  • Affordable: Unity All Flash configurations will be extremely affordable. We will see prices soon. UnityVSA Community Edition allows anyone to get started for free and upgrade into the supported Professional Edition.

Here is a picture of all models:

Compared to VNX EMC brought the number down to four models for All Flash and Hybride. Unity is Utilizing the latest Intel chip sets and it's based on Linux Operating Environment.

And if we compare a VNX with a Unity system, see what EMC has accomplish. When comparing a VNX5800 to a Unity 600F a reduction in Form factor was brought down from 7U to 2U. Cabling has been reduced from 30 to 6 cables. Power consumption improved over 50% and rack install can be done in minutes.

On the left we have the 4 Unity All Flash configurations, with a chrome logo. The Unity 300F, 400F, 500F and the 600F. These support SSDs only.

On the right we have the 4 Unity Hybrid configurations, with the chrome and Blue logo. The Unity 300, 400, 500 and the 600. These support a mix of SSDs and HDDs.

And at the bottom you have the UnityVSA and the Vblock’s based on Unity
